Basketball
Program overview
The SESA Basketball is offered in partnership with Basketball NSW (BNSW) and will provide coaching, training, competition, and support services to enhance the skill level of athletes.
The program is part of BNSW Developing Athlete Program (DAP) which is the second tier of BNSW athlete pathway. The program has a strong focus on the identification, development, and support of U14 & U16 athletes.
Scholarship holders will be required to undergo an induction process, attend weekly training sessions, and participate in academy activities.

Athlete eligibility
To be eligible for a SESA Basketball Developing Athlete Program Scholarship, athletes must satisfy the following criteria:
Reside within the South East Region of NSW
Be a registered member of Basketball NSW and be associated with a Basketball NSW recognised Basketball Association
Be competing in the U14-U18 age groups in Basketball NSW League
Athletes turning 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 or 17 years of age in 2024 (born 2007 - 2011, 2012).
Selection criteria
To gain selection into the SESA Basketball Developing Athlete Program athletes must satisfy the eligibility criteria and demonstrate the following:
Display the potential or ability to compete successfully at the national level:
Athletic ability e.g. speed, height, quick hands and strength
Display the necessary work ethic and attitude to improve as a player
Potential to be socially compatible and display a sense of team within a group
Be highly receptive to coaching
Demonstrated desire to succeed not only in basketball but in educational, vocational and personal life
Outstanding desire and commitment to working hard at improving mental, physical and basketball skills
Conditions of scholarship
SESA Basketball Scholarship holders are expected to:
Attend all program activities
Be committed and prepared to work toward improving performance
Be committed to a holistic approach to athlete development
Not take or use performance enhancing drugs or illegal drugs or participate in other activities that are prohibited by the South East Sports Academy Code of Conduct
Adhere to SESA policies and relevant Basketball NSW policies and by-laws
Behave and dress in a professional and dignified manner when representing SESA
An athlete levy of $250* will apply which covers the cost of program activities
$100 uniform levy (mandatory in 2023 for new SESA uniform). Uniform items can be purchased in subsequent years but not compulsory if uniform is still in good condition
A selection process and additional levy apply to attend the Your Local Club Academy Games.
**Academy Games in 2024 is targeted at U16 age group
*** Invitational camps will incur an additional fee
Application process
Complete an online nomination form by 5pm 31 August 2023.
Attend trials on Saturday 2 September at Goulburn
Applications may be discussed with:
Parents/ Guardians
Nominated referee, coach and school
Basketball NSW.
2023/24 Program
Athletes selected into the program will be required to attend:
Induction / Education camp on 11-12 November 2023
Weekly training sessions (Term 4 & Term 1)
Off-court education sessions
Inter-Academy Camp for selected athletes
It is anticipated that there will be three or 4 squads – Queanbeyan, Goulburn, Merimbula & Batemans Bay. The squads will come together for the induction camp.
Goulburn sessions are at 6am on Tuesdays commencing 17 October 2023
Queanbeyan sessions are at 6am on Thursdays commencing 19 October 2023 (Gold Squad will be either Thursday am or Saturday am)
Merimbula sessions will be on the weekend commencing 14/15 October 2023
Batemans Bay will be every 2nd Saturday morning at 9.30am

In 2023/24 the SESA Basketball program will be a 2 -tier program (gold and silver squad). All athletes will be expected to attend weekly training sessions at their satellite location.
Gold squad athletes will be expected to attend additional sessions to be held on weekends at either Queanbeyan, Goulburn, Bateman’s Bay or Merimbula. Approximately 4 sessions plus a 2 day camp in Merimbula.
Gold Squad:
Athletes selected into the Gold Squad will be required to attend:
Weekly satellite sessions (term 4 & term 1)
Squad session on a weekend at either Queanbeyan, Goulburn, Merimbula or Batemans Bay (approx. 2 per term)
Inter-Academy Camp on 1-2 December (additional cost)
2 day camp in Merimbula - date tbc
